The purpose
Photo converters can produce an attractive pixel preview while leaving the stitcher to solve the real project: which floss to buy, how large to cut the fabric, which symbol belongs to each square, and how to print a chart without shrinking it beyond use. This pattern maker treats those decisions as the product rather than an afterthought.
The current version is designed for hobbyists making gifts, pet and family portraits, flower motifs, keepsakes, and first custom patterns. It starts with an image you already chose and preserves that composition. It does not generate a new picture or claim that more automation replaces craft judgment.
How conversion works
The browser reduces the source image to the requested stitch width while preserving its aspect ratio. Each sampled color is compared with a focused reference of common DMC solid cotton shades. The most frequently used matches form a limited palette, and every stitch is assigned to its closest remaining color. The result includes color blocks, symbols, thread counts, and physical dimensions for common Aida cloth.
This is deterministic image analysis, not generative AI. The same file and settings create the same chart. It also runs locally: the selected file is displayed through a temporary browser address and processed with canvas APIs rather than uploaded to an image service.
Limits stated plainly
DMC is a trademark of its respective owner, and this independent tool is not affiliated with or endorsed by DMC. Digital color values are approximations. Screens emit light, floss reflects light, dye lots vary, and fabric changes perceived color. Verify important palettes with physical thread under natural light.
The included reference is not a complete catalog of every current or historic floss, specialty fiber, metallic, blend, or variegated product. Generated charts use full cross stitches and do not automatically add backstitch, fractional stitches, beads, or manual cleanup. Ratings are not published until they come from a real, auditable review system.
