The focused DMC reference favors common solid cotton colors and is not a complete catalog of specialty fibers, metallics, variegated floss, or every shade ever released. Generated charts use full cross stitches. Backstitch, fractional stitches, blends, beads, and hand-edited outlines are outside this first tool version.

Begin with a close crop and 60 to 80 stitches wide. Set the palette around 16 colors, then judge the silhouette rather than tiny screen detail. If the subject is unclear, add stitches. If the chart contains scattered symbols, reduce colors or simplify the source background. Change one control at a time so you can see which decision improved the design.

Finally, select the intended fabric count and inspect the finished size. A pattern can look quick on a screen while containing ten thousand stitches. Print only after the effort, dimensions, and floss list match the kind of project you want to complete. Save the source image and final PDF together so the chart can be recreated or adjusted later.

Estimate fabric and thread before shopping

Use the selected fabric count to calculate the stitched area, then add a handling and finishing margin. Two inches on every side may be enough for a small hoop, while three inches gives a framer more room to center and lace the piece. Round every fabric measurement upward. The difference between an exact cut and a comfortable cut costs little compared with restarting a finished border that sits too close to the edge.

The thread key counts stitches rather than skeins because consumption depends on fabric count, number of strands, tension, starting tails, and travel on the back. Use counts to compare relative demand: a shade assigned to half the chart needs more planning than a shade used for twenty highlights. Buy dominant colors together when dye-lot consistency matters, and keep labels attached to every partial skein.
